Alice High School could have a new head coach and athletic director by the end of the month.

That would be the ideal situation, Alice school superintendent Dr. Grace Everett said about hiring the coach and athletic director who will replace Chris Soza.

“I hope we have somebody in place by the end of January,” Everett said. “That’s the best-case scenario. We may not have someone hired by then, but I would like to.”

The school district began advertising the position after Soza said at the Alice Coyote Booster Club’s Fall Sports Banquet that he will not be the district’s athletic director or head football coach next season. His decision followed a tumultuous relationship with the district which ended with him being reassigned to William Adams Junior High School as an assistant principal.

The school district posted the position on the TEA’s Education Service Center Region II Job Board, and there are plans to advertise the job on coaching websites and on the Texas Association of School Boards website.

The district has received interest from numerous candidates. The job posting stated Jan. 18th as the cutoff for applicants, however, Everett said that will likely be extended.

The posting states that the primary purpose of the job is to “direct and manage the overall program of extracurricular and intramural athletics for the district. Work to provide each student with opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and local requirements.”

Some of the qualifications include a Masters degree from an accredited college or university, knowledge of overall operations of an athletic program and at least “five years successful teaching and coaching experience.”
Several Alice school board members have said since the job was posted, there has been a large response from interested coaches.

According to the posting, the district plans on beginning the hiring process on Jan. 18.
The salary for the job ranges from $65,000 to $80,000, and the posting states the final salary amount will be based on experience, credentials and 207-work day contract.
