Roy “Dean” Kruckenberg, 71, died peacefully at home on December 29, 2015 in Alice, Texas. Though he battled cancer for many years that is not what defined him.
Dean’s life passions were choral music and teaching. While attending Baylor University to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, Dean fell in love with a fellow Music Education major, Marsha Lynn Cox. Following their graduation in 1967, they were married and moved to Biloxi, Mississippi where Dean served four years’ service as a Captain in the United States Air Force (1967-71) so that he could earn a GI scholarship to pursue his Master’s Degree in Music Education at Texas Tech University (1972).
Dean shared his gift of teaching choral music to hundreds of junior high and high school students. He served as Choir Director at New Braunfels High School from 1972-74; Choir Director Alice High School from 1974-80; and Assistant Choir Director at William Adams Junior High School from 2011 – 2015. Though he left the teaching profession from 1981-2010, Dean continued to devote his time to coaching junior high and high school students preparing for vocal performance competitions. His coaching and mentoring resulted in numerous awards and achievements for his students, but his biggest accomplishment was instilling a lifelong appreciation of music in those he taught.
However, perhaps most lovingly and importantly, Dean served as the Music Director for his church, First Presbyterian Church of Alice, Texas, for 40 years. Dean led youth, adult and bell choirs during his tenure, all accompanied by his best friend, wife and partner, Marsha, who continues to serve as the church organist.
Dean is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marsha; children, Dina (Bradley) Toland, Niki (Jack) Rabren, and Brian; grandchildren, Alec, Maddie, Thom, Emma and Grant; and siblings Sue (Bill) Carruthers and Jeannie (Dave) Grubaugh.
Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main St. in Alice. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church located at 77 North Adams St in Alice. A reception will follow at the church.
