SAN DIEGO — The injury bug hurt the San Diego Vaqueros Monday night in Zapata.
A handful of in-game injuries slowed the Vaqueros and allowed the Hawks to come from behind and win their non-district match-up, 71-65.
The six-point loss was San Diego’s final game before the holiday break. The Vaqueros won’t be on the court again until Monday afternoon when they play in the Falfurrias tournament. San Diego is beginning the tournament with a 9:30 a.m. game against Premont. They then take on Lyford in another tournament game at 6:45 p.m.
San Diego jumped out in front of Zapata early. Behind a complete game by R.J. Barrera, who scored a game-high 24 points, the Vaqueros led 16-12 after the first period. By halftime, they owned a 29-24 advantage. However, injuries took some of the team’s starters out of the game and that allowed Zapata to get back in the game. The Hawks outscored San Diego, 26-19, in the third. The led by one going into the final period, but then extended their lead by four before the final buzzer.
Aside from Barrera, Brendon Uribe was San Diego’s only other player to score in double figures.
