BEN BOLT — Leading up to the start of District 31-2A , the Agua Dulce Lady Longhorns amassed an impressive 11-1 record.
Their run included tournament championships in Hebbronville and their own tournament in Agua Dulce. However, coach Jesse Cadena knew better going into the team’s district opener Tuesday night at Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco High School. Now in his fourth season with the Lady Longhorns, he knew records meant little in the always-competitive match-up.
He was right. Both teams played some of their best basketball of the season Tuesday night. It wasn’t until the Lady Longhorns were able to put together a decisive third-period that they began to pull away from the Lady Badgers. Agua Dulce went on to win by 12, 43-31.
The Lady Longhorns were leading 21-17 at halftime, but came out in the third and put together a 12-4 run.
Lillie Garza led Agua Dulce with 14 points. Lisa Hadnot and Abby Garibaldo each had 10 points.
The Lady Longhorns were slowed because offensive and defensive standout Sydney Surber sat out most of the game because of early foul trouble. She’s the team’s second-leading and their top defender. Without Surber in the line-up, the Lady Longhorns struggled to get going, but they managed.
“I felt without our top defender for all four quarters, we were hurting,” Cadena said. “We ever out of our rhythm . She’s one of our top scorers and she always guard’s the other team’s best player. Without her, we pulled it out as a team.”
The Lady Longhorns have another tough one against Refugio Friday night.
