Two longtime San Diego Volunteer Firefighters were honored Saturday for their loyalty and dedication to the department and the community.
Firemen Lalo Longoria and Alex Tunchez have put in sweat, blood and long hours giving back to the community they live in.
Longoria has been with the department for 20 years. He gears up for every call to make a difference in somebody's life not for the acknowledgement and credit of being a firemen.
“It was a surprise, I was shocked,” Longoria said about receiving his award from the fire department. “I knew we were getting recognized but I didn't expect this.”
Also honored at the appreciation dinner was Firemen Tunchez. Tunchez has been with the department for 18 years.
“We don't do it for the glory,” he said. “We get little recognition and ,I speak for the guys when I say, it made us feel good.”
Tunchez is also the head coach for the Lady Vaqueros Basketball team. “I try and get the kids into the department,” he stated.
“(The recognition) is a small token that goes a long way,” Tunchez said.
All 24 firefighters, made up of men and women, were honored with a certificate and a pin during their appreciation dinner.
