SAN DIEGO — After splitting games in their first day of the 38th Annual Vaquero Booster Club Boys’ Basketball Tournament, the home team looked strong Friday night.

The Vaqueros scored 35 second-half points to beat Karnes Citty, 49-44, in tournament play Friday night at San Diego High School.

On Thursday, the San Diego boys began the tournament by losing to Skidmore-Tynan by 13 and then beating La Grulla by 17 in pool play.

San Diego’s key contributors were senior R.J. Barrera, who led the team with 16, and Bryan Laso, who scored 15. Ryan Briones and Ralph Saenz scored seven points each. Laso and Barrera had two three-pointers each. Saenz had one.

San Diego and Karnes City were tied in the first period, 10-10. The Vaqueros then went cold and fell into a huge deficit when they were outscored by eight in the second period. San Diego totaled only four points in the second.

They came back and outscored Karnes City, 17-9, in the third and, 18-13, in the fourth.

Earlier in the day, Noah Villarreal scored 10 points to lead the Orange Grove Bulldogs to a 51-44 win over Falfurrias.
