With only nine minutes left in the ball game Friday night, the Alice Coyotes finally forced the Warriors of Victoria West into their first punt of the game.
Finally. A stop. A break Alice’s way.
Well, the punt by the Warriors went like everything else did in what was supposed to be a District 30-5A showdown. Victoria West’s punt from midfield went deep into Alice territory, bounced a few times and then was downed at the Coyote 1-yard line.
It was that kind of night for the Coyotes. Despite a respectful second-half effort by the Coyotes, the Warriors won big in Memorial Stadium, 42-21.
The setback didn’t knock Alice out of the playoff race in District 30-5A, but it places a greater emphasis on the next three games. Alice has a road game against Corpus Christi Miller Friday before hosting playoff contender Gregory-Portland a week later. Alice’s regular-season finale is at Flour Bluff.
Victoria West and Alice were playing for the second-place spot in 30-5A Friday night, but it was quickly apparent it would be a long night for the Coyotes.
A week after scoring on their first offensive play of the game, the Coyotes committed a turnover on their first play from scrimmage. The fumble gave Victoria West the ball at the Alice 33-yard line. Quarterback Gamarquis Girdy later scored on a 15-yard touchdown run. Girdy haunted Alice’s defense through the entire game. He finished with 26 carried for 207 yards. He had three rushing touchdowns and threw for another one.
Victoria West scored again on their next possession, this time on a 44-yard run by Stephen Clements. With 1:18 left in the first quarter, Girdy threw a high-arching pass to Jon Jimenez for a 31-yard score.
Girdy scored on a one-yard plunge in the second quarter.
The Coyotes’ first three possessions ended with a fumble, a punt and a fumble.
Alice had a chance to get points at the end of the second quarter, but their drive ended on a fourth-down play at the Warriors' 2-yard line.
Alice didn’t get on the score board until the third quarter. Trailing 28-0, the Coyotes reached the end zone on a 24-yard run by Cameron Trevino.
After the Warriors came back with a four-yard touchdown run by Zevaughn Shelton, Alice put together a nice drive, which ended with a 10-yard run by Jonavan Lopez.
Girdy scored late in the third on a five-yard run.
Alice came back and scored right away when Lopez took the ensuing kickoff and faked a reverse to Trevino. Lopez kept the ball and outran everyone for a 95-yard touchdown.
