Name and rank

Sgt. Aniceto Perez, training director

Number of years with Alice Police Department

I have been with the Alice PD for 34 years.

Number of years of experience total. Where?

I have a total of 36 years of experience. I worked with the Duval County Sheriff's Department for two years before coming to the Alice PD.

What made you want to be in law enforcement?

I always liked to help make changes and knew that through law enforcement I could make changes to myself, the public and especially to those around me. This career puts me in a position where I can give advise to others. Since my elementary days, I knew I wanted to be an officer. Officers would visit the schools for career day plus I had a cousin and an uncle in law enforcement.

Does your family support your career choice?

Most definitely. My parents have supported my decision. At first my mom attempted to convince me that my career choice was too dangerous however, she eventually told me if this career was in my heart then I had to do it.

My wife and kids use to call me daily when I was out in the field and they continue to do so now that they have grown. I don't take my work home, but they see and read how dangerous things are for all law enforcement personal. They pray for my safety and tell me to always be careful.

What's the most rewarding part of your job?

I have been through many divisions of law enforcement. I have been a dispatcher, a jailer, on patrol, an investigator etc. Now, I use my 36 years of experience to teach other officers. I get to pass down my experience and knowledge. I find it rewarding when officers come to me and explain a situation where they used something I taught them.

What do you believe is the hardest part of your job? Why?

The hardest thing is getting children and adolescents to change. I can only give them my advice and hope that they change their paths in life. I want to influence the youth to be better and eventually be a part of a productive society.

With recent events around the nation I don't blame the media. Their job is to give the news and sell papers and in order for them to do they have to share the negative and bad stories more often the the positive ones. The media is a good asset to have in your corner.
