Celia Garcia, 86, passed away Tuesday October 6, 2015 after a short illness. Celia was born on September 05, 1929, to Mauro and Ester Garcia. She was an original hometown girl from San Diego, Texas. Throughout her young life, she was educated in the San Diego Independent School District. Her senior year, she was voted into office becoming the Class Vice-President. In addition, she achieved the greatest honor of all becoming the valedictorian of the S.D.H.S, graduating Class of 1946.
Upon graduation, Celia attended Draughon's Business School in San Antonio, Texas. She completed several courses in business and subsequently began her career at the Mullen Investment Company in Alice, Texas. After, she took a position at Carlisle Insurance Agency, and by 1950, she finally made her last career decision. She accepted a job at Central Power and Light Company in San Diego, Texas. This is where she made her life-long career, retiring in 1988 after 38 years.
Celia had many hobbies that she enjoyed from early adulthood to present. Along with the enjoyment of antiquing, she took an interest in painting. Her favorite type was oil painting. Having a peaked interest, she decided to take some art classes in Alice. This led to her participation in several art workshops in Corpus Christi, Texas under the direction of several well known artists. Not only was her interest in the arts, she also had an intellectual need to fulfill, so she decided to embark on a spelling challenge! In 1995, Celia competed an adult Spelling Bee competition and won. Moreover, she continued with the competition for the next three years, where she was the champion three years-running!
Not only was Celia educated and artistic, she was a positive community member who served her community well. She was a member of the St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church, where she volunteered her time and efforts in order to help her church in many capacities. Not only had faith played a role in her life, but also the idea of service to the community led her to her next endeavor. In 1991, Celia became an active member of the San Diego Rotary Club. As a member of the Rotary Club, she volunteered countless hours to serving the community of San Diego, as well as, being involved in projects throughout Duval County.
She shared "Chef" duties along side member Gilbert Gonzales, by preparing the meals at weekly meetings. Cooking for the Rotarians and guests was an honor for Celia, as she truly enjoyed cooking.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Octavio "Tavo" Garcia and Humberto "La Rata" Garcia, one sister-in-law, Jacqueline M. Garcia, one nephew, Steven James Garcia and one great-nephew, Saul Aaron Santos.
She is survived by four nieces, Terry Padilla, San Benito, Texas, Christina (Roy) Santos, San Diego, Texas, Michelle (Raymon) Mendez, McAllen, Texas, Vanessa (Mark) Johnson, Shreveport, Louisiana, one nephew, David M. (Gloria) Garcia, San Diego, Texas, one sister, Diana Garcia, Kingsville, Texas, one sister-in-law, Renate C. Garcia, Kingsville, Texas, and several great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin on Thursday October 8, 2015 at 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home in San Diego with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday October 9, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in San Diego.
