Lois Adams was not able to attend the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International 86th Texas State Organization Convention held in San Antonio, Grand Hyatt Hotel, so a few Beta Pi members took a little convention to her. President Elva Garcia, Adela Navarro, Yolanda Barrera and Mellie Smithwick traveled to New Braunfels after the convention to visit Adams at her residence at the Oaktree Assisted Living Community.
“We found Adams in the dinning room enjoying lunch with other residents. She was surprised to see us, but welcomed us to the living room for a nice visit,” said Smithwick. Garcia shared highlights of the convention with Adams and gifted her DKG gifts on behalf of the chapter.
Membership chairman Yolanda Barrera presented Adams with her 70 year membership pin. Adams joined DKG Beta Pi April 1, 1944, bringing her years to 71. Adams served most of her active years as recording secretary.
When asked if she had any words of wisdom for Beta Pi members she said, “Keep going and do what they ask you to do. If they ask you to be a president, take the job; you’ll do as well as a lot of us did.” Adams’ advice for the next president, “Just be there all the time…and delegate as many jobs as you can.”
Adams spent her teaching career at Schallert Elementary in Alice. She celebrated her 107 birthday on July 2. Beta Pi Chapter is blessed to have Adams as a loyal member.
