Fifty-eight marijuana plants were confiscated Tuesday afternoon from a backyard on County Road 132, sheriff officials said.

Barry Scott Steadham, 53, of Alice, was arrested for possession of marijuana and taken to the Jim Wells County jail.

The marijuana weighed 104 pounds, Lt. Felix Saenz said.

Saenz and Sgt. Ernie Rivera were investigating a separate case on a stolen tractor, Saenz said.

The investigators made contact with an individual outside a home when they discovered the plants in the backyard, officials said.

The plants ranged between six to 12-feet tall and located behind a four-feet chain-linked fence, Saenz said.

"Was I really seeing marijuana that tall," Saenz recalled his first reaction.

Officials dug up the plants from the backyard, loaded them onto two trucks and transported the plants to the sheriff's department.

The plants were cut in smaller sizes by deputies, placed in boxes and stored in evidence locker.
