(BPT) - Work commitments, family obligations, workout time and – if you’re lucky – playtime mean few minutes left over for something as mundane as money management. Yet staying on top of your finances is important, no matter how busy you are, which could be why a third of all Americans say they now bank on their phones or online more than they did a year ago, according to a new survey by Chase. Here are five ways Americans are using digital banking to make it easier than ever to manage their money:

1. Logging on to banking websites

Bank websites make it easy to transfer funds, check balances, set up direct deposits and pay bills. All you need is a device with WiFi, and you can bank online from your work PC, laptop or tablet while you’re on the go. In fact, Chase found that 35 percent of Americas are using online banking more this year than they did last year.

2. Using mobile banking apps on the go

Mobile apps make it even easier to bank on the fly, using your smartphone. Chase found people are using mobile apps to bank virtually anywhere they have mobile service, including at work, during client meetings and even in the checkout line at a store.

3. Getting the most out of a visit to the ATM

Smartphones, tablets and computers aren’t the only technology Americans are using to manage money on the run. They’re more aware than ever of all the cool things they can do at an ATM besides just withdraw money. Many understand they can view account balances and transactions, transfer money between accounts and deposit checks with ATMs.

4. Banking on their own time

While they may want to sit down with a person to talk about investments or loan applications, only 16 percent of people in the Chase survey said they’re visiting bank branches more than they did a year ago for routine transactions. Instead, they’re using their mobile apps or banking online more.

5. Saving themselves some embarrassment

People in the Chase survey said they’d used mobile banking at a restaurant and during a date, which seems a bit odd until you think about it. Checking an account balance before the bill arrives could save you some social disgrace. Smart daters who check their funds in a timely manner can transfer cash where they need it – and avoid an embarrassing situation.
