Alice High School’s Academic Octathlon won the State Title for the 11th time in the last 12 years.

The Academic Octahlon is made up of 9th and 10th graders in a feeder program to Academic Decathlon. The team studies the same college level material as the Academic Decathlon and follows the same Fall semester schedule, but in the Spring semester they compete in April rather than late February.

The subjects related to the theme of “Energy Innovations” were: Essay, Math, Music Theory, Art History, Literature (novel and short selections), Science of energy generation (mostly Physics), Economics (Macro, Micro, and the impact of energy on the economy), and Social Science (political policies on energy from 1960 to present). This year’s topic is “The Executive Branch”.  On the list of materials to prepare are: 1) 250 specific political vocabulary words related to presidential issues, 2) biographies of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, and FDR, 3) Article II of The Constitution, 4) ten Supreme Court cases related to presidential power, 5) nine Constitutional Amendments dealing with the executive branch or voting rights, 6) seven controversial presidential elections (1800, 1824, 1876, 1888, 1968, and 2000), and 6) the historical novel “The Year of Six Presidents: 1920”.

Team members of the championship team are: Rose Torres (9th grade), Ryley Priddy (10th grade), Autumn Flores (10th grade), Elizabeth Gutierrez (10th grade), Javi Martinez (9th grade), Angel Campos (9th grade) and Andy Zamora (10th grade).

A practice meet held in early April had Alice High School ranked fourth in the state behind Lubbock High School, Katy-Taylor High School and Katy-Seven Lakes High School. At the competition for Region and final State Rank, Alice High School entered the last event needing a team score of 4,200 to earn a narrow victory over Lubbock High School. In the previous events Alice High School’s highest team score was 3,660 so the prospects of repeating as state champions did not look very good. On the Social Studies event, the last event, Alice High School scored 4,700 points to earn a dramatic win. This is the second year in a row where Alice High School championship centered on a dominant score in one particular event. Last year it was economics.
