A two-vehicle collision claimed the life of a 26-year-old Alice man five miles east of Benavides Thursday morning, according to Department of Safety Trooper Charlie Ramirez.

Manuel Soliz Jr. was traveling eastbound in a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis on Farm-to-Market 2295 when he veered into westbound lane for an unknown reason, Ramirez said.

Soliz hit a 2008 pickup truck driven by Patrick John Hannom, 43, of Kingsville and his passenger, 49-year-old Francisco Cervantes of Kingsville.

Soliz was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Ramirez.

Hannom and Cervantes were transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

In a separate incident on Wednesday morning, Juan Angel Villarreal, 65, of San Juan, Texas lost his life after a possible weather-related crash involving two semi-trucks on north Highway 281, according to Department of Public Safety officials.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. the two semi-trucks were northbound on Highway 281 when 58-year-old Reynaldo Zuniga Garcia of Brownsville possibly hydroplaned, lost control and landed his truck on its side, Ramirez said.

Half of the semi-truck was on the inside line and the other half on the median, officials said. Traffic was delayed for hours as the wreckage was cleared.

Villarreal may not have seen the truck and slammed into it, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene with severe head injuries and other major injuries sustained from the crash, Ramirez said.

Garcia had no injuries and walked away.

Both crashes are under investigation.
