Dear Students, Parents and Teachers of the Alice Independent School District:
My name is Adrian Pena I am a candidate for trustee place 7 of the Alice Independent School District Board. My parents are Esther Garza Pena and the late Oscar Pena.
My wife, Amanda Munoz Pena and I have been married 23 years and we have three children, Michael (19), Elizabeth Ella (18) and Joseph Pena (11). All of my kids have or are attending school in the Alice Independent School District.
I am a product of the Alice Independent School District. Following my graduation from Alice High School in 1986, I attended Sam Houston State University graduating in December 1990 with a BBA - Business Degree and a BA - Spanish Degree. Aside from my two degrees, I currently hold the following designations: Certified School Risk Manager and multi-lines claims adjuster in the state of Texas.
In January 1991 I began my career in the insurance industry as a workers' compensation and property adjuster for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Houston. In 1993 I moved on to Texas Mutual Insurance Company where I worked for the next 10 years in the workers' compensation hearings division. It was during this time that I relocated to Alice in a home based office setting and have been here ever since.
In 2004, I accepted a position with the Texas Association of School Boards Risk Management Fund. I have been employed with "TASB" for the past 11 years as a Senior Risk Management Consultant. As a TASB Risk Management Fund Consultant, I work specifically with Texas School Districts, School Boards, Community Colleges, Educational Service Centers and other educational entities. My job duties for the TASB Risk Management Fund is to ensure that my Member districts and their Boards have a complete understanding of the risk management product they are purchasing; this includes the district's workers' compensation plans, property, liability, auto and unemployment compensation coverages. In addition, I counsel districts on risk management processes, claims reviews for all lines of coverages and bid specifications for purchasing the right risk management plan for their District. My territory encompasses approximately 190 school districts and school boards from Del Rio to San Antonio, Victoria, and south to Brownsville.
I am in the school business and bring 11 years of experience to the AISD School Board. This coupled with my 24 years of risk management/insurance coverage issues and contract reviews will no doubt assist me in every decision that has to be made for the betterment of AISD. I work with School Districts, School Boards, Superintendents, Business Managers and other educational entities on a daily basis. In addition:
My wife, Amanda, and I have a vested interest in our district as we are the parents of three children who have attended or are attending AISD. Michael graduated in 2014, Ella will graduate on June 5, 2015, and Joseph is currently a 5th grader at Dubose Intermediate School.
Amanda has taught Math at Alice High School for the past 16 years and has been a Math teacher for a total of 25 years.
My mother, Esther Pena, worked at Saenz Elementary as a para professional for 36 years and instilled in our family that the value of a solid education is a tool that can be used for a lifetime.
Organizations and Civic Duty:
Alice Athletic Booster Club. Instilling a sense of duty in our children is something that Amanda and I attempt to teach our children. To that end, I have been an Alice Athletic Booster Club member for the past 6 years. Cooking on Friday afternoon "pork steak tacos" has become a tradition that Amanda and I are proud to be associated with. I volunteered a total of 65 hours for the Booster Club during the Fall of 2014. I enjoy visiting with all of our customers and enjoy the comradery of working for a great cause! Proceeds from this club are geared toward deserving scholarship recipients as well as assisting the athletic needs of our District.
Hispanic Heritage Committee BBQ Cook Off / Fiesta Del Centro. I have been a member of this club for approximately seven years. I, along with many other volunteers, put in long hours in September and throughout the year to raise money for deserving scholarship recipients of Alice ISD.
My family and I are members of the congregation at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
My campaign promises, pledges and goals are clear, simple and achievable:
On every decision that I make, I will take into account my work experience, my educational experience and the principles of what I believe will best benefit the students of AlSD ... in and out of the classroom.
Honesty is the best policy. I will be open and transparent to the constituents that I will serve as a Trustee in Place 7. I'm here to serve our students and parents, teachers, administrators, staff, and the community of Alice, Texas.
Integrity can be defined as doing what's right, always. I have no agenda other than to serve the Alice Independent School District and bring it to a level of achievement that our whole community can be proud of.
I am in the school business and I want to bring my experience, expertise and knowledge to my hometown school district. I ask for your support and vote for AlSD School Board Trustee, Place 7. I ask that you help me in achieving the goals that Alice ISO has set forth for our students. I thank you in advance for your support and I thank you for voting for the qualified candidate.
