Each year, Alice Echo-News Journal selects a recipient for the Lowell Hunt Scholarship in the amount of $500. This year's recipient of the Lowell Hunt Scholarship is Erik Jimenez.

Hunt was named publisher of the Alice Echo-News in 1966. He was heavily involved in all aspects of the community, serving as President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Alice Urban Renewal Agency, the Alice Industrial Foundation, Alice Industrial Development Team, Director of the United Way and a bank director for the Bank of South Texas and later First City Bank.

Hunt was awarded many honors over the years for his communtiy involvement. He was also found and chairman of the Southwest Energy Exposition Inc. He owned a stationary store and was active in real estate, hotels, ranching and politics in South Texas.

The scholarship is given in memory of the Alice Echo-News Journal's late publisher.
