To honor his contributions to the Alice community, Pete Ganis was the recipient of the 2014 Citizen of the Year award at the 78th Annual Alice Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Tuesday.
The Citizen of the Year award is given to an individual that has contributed in an outstanding and exceptional manner to the betterment of the community and its citizens. Ganis is owner of Alice Chevrolet. The nominee must be 21-years-old and be in civic or public affairs at the time of nomination.
He has contributed to the community as sponsor for Boys and Girls Club sports programs and has awarded the club with two passenger vans.
John Bedgood, the 2013 Citizen of the Year, presented Ganis with the plaque.
Lauren Rodriguez, daughter of Rene and Priscilla Rodriguez, was named the 2014 Junior Citizen of the Year.
The Junior Citizen Award rewards a special student that has demonstrated exceptional interest, understanding and involvement in citizenship and community activities. Students are selected by teacher and counselors and the student is then asked to write an essay on a selected topic.
Along with the award, the Alice Chamber of Commerce will present a $1,000 scholarship to Lauren.
Executive Director Juan Navejar said, "We congratulate all who were recognized at the banquet. Every nominee was well deserving of the awards presented.”
