Wheat production in the Coastal Bend has increased significantly this year. Therefore, on April 7th from 9 to 2 AgriLife Extension in Nueces and San Patricio Counties will be hosting a Spring Wheat Field Day which will begin at the AgriLife Research and Extension Center on Highway 44 in Corpus Christ and conclude with a tour of the spring wheat variety trial near Odem. Extension Agronomist, Dr. Josh McGinty and State Small Grains Specialist, Dr. Clark Neely will be on hand to discuss spring wheat production in the Coastal Bend. The program will incorporate a couple hours of classroom lectures with tour stops of wheat research plots at the center and at the variety trials near Odem.

In addition to learning about the latest varieties and how they have performed in local variety trials, growers will have an opportunity to observe how UAV drones are being utilized to collect date in these research efforts. UAV imagery has been used to make observations on leaf rust pressure, plant heights, and more.

Drone technology offers a lot of new opportunities to agriculture in terms of field scouting, so it is exiting to highlight a portion of those efforts during this field day.

Additionally, participants will receive updates on insect, disease, weed, and nutrient management strategies for small grains producer.

Participants in the Wheat Field Day will qualify for CEUs for their pesticide applicators license. A participation fee of $20 is being charged and includes a catered lunch being provided, therefore, those that are interested in participating in the program are encouraged to RSVP at 361.767.5223 prior to April 3rd so that arrangements can be made for the meal.

Individuals with disabilities, who require an auxiliary aid, service or accommodation in order to participate in any of the mentioned activities, are encouraged to contact the County Extension Office eight days before all programs for assistance. Extension programs serve people of all ages regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin.
