SAN DIEGO — The Lady Vaqueros finally picked on someone their own size and things went very well.

Playing in their District 31-3A opener, the San Diego girls topped Bishop, 9-5, Tuesday night. The Badgers were only the third Class 3A team the Lady Vaqueros have played this season.

Their other outings were against bigger 4A, 5A and 6A ball clubs like San Antonio South San, La Vernia, Pearsall, Sharyland, Laredo Cigarroa and LBJ.

“We’ve been playing nothing but bigger schools,” San Diego coach Rey Ramirez said. “We have a very young team. We start four freshmen and only two seniors, so playing these bigger schools was good for us.”

Freshman Marlena Martinez earned the win against the Lady Badgers.

The win began the 31-3A schedule on a good note for San Diego, although the district only has four teams, all of which will advance to the postseason. Ramirez said even like that, the goal is to win as many games for a better postseason seeding.

“It’s a matter of seeding,” Ramirez said. “Obviously, we don’t want to be the fourth-place team in our district and play a district champion in the first round of the playoffs.”
