Officer Orlando Jasso was on patrol on North Texas Boulevard working traffic Monday afternoon when he spotted a driver using a cell phone.

Kristen Susan Jones was traveling south in a 1998 Nissan Maxima through an active school zone using her cell phone when Jasso conducted the traffic stop. After Jasso made contact, Jones apologized for being on the phone as it continued to ring.

Jasso smelled synthetic marijuana and noticed her hands trembling, he said.

According to the report, a young child was in the passenger seat.

He received verbal consent to search her vehicle when he located a black woman’s jacket. In the jacket pocket he found a red and white cigarette box with two clear knotted plastic bags containing synthetic marijuana.

She was cited for using a cell phone in a school zone and was charged for possession of a controlled substance. Jones called someone to pick up her child and Child Protective Services were called.

Jones was arrested and transported to the Jim Wells County jail.
