A Texas Department of Transportation employee is in critical condition at a local hospital after his vehicle was struck by a long-time trial judge.
Corpus Christi police said 34-year-old Martin Garcia was struck June 5 by a Cadillac DeVille belonging to 105th District Court Judge Manuel Banales, 57, while working on signage along a shoulder near the ramp connecting South Padre Island Drive and Interstate 37.
Police said Banales was exiting from SPID northbound to I-37 southbound when he lost control of his vehicle. The car slammed into the TxDOT truck, causing the truck to hit Garcia, who was standing outside the truck when the accident occurred. Garcia sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident and was transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
As of Monday, his condition had been upgraded to serious.
Banales, who had to be rescued from his vehicle by emergency crews with the Jaws of Life, was also transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital, but with non-life-threatening injuries. Police were still investigating the cause of the accident as of Monday.
