ALICE, Texas – Jose Jesus “Chuy” Compean, 58, passed away April 12, 2008 in a Corpus Christi hospital. He was born December 25, 1949 in Laredo, Texas, to Jose and Balbina Compean. He was an oilfield worker and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Alice.

Survivors include his wife, San Juanita Compean of Alice; his mother, Balbina Compean of Laredo; five daughters, Hilda (Arnulfo) Saldivar, Olga Martinez, Veronica C. “Betty” Buentello, Jessica (Jeremy) Sanchez and Cecilia (Freddy) Monsevais, all of Alice; one son, Carlos Compean of San Antonio, Texas; five sisters, Theresa (Manuel) DeLuna, Juanita (Gilberto) Castillo, Dora Elia Compean and Balbina Angelica (Luis) Gamez, all of Laredo, Texas, and Cynthia (Rogelio) Zamilpa of San Antonio; two brothers, Xavier Compean of California and Efrain (Gina) Compean of San Antonio; and 17 grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 15, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. that evening at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel in Alice. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Alice. Burial will follow at Roberson-Collins Cemetery in Alice.

VICTORIA, Texas – JoBeth Wren Cook, 75, of Victoria, formerly of Alice, passed away Saturday, April 12. She was born July 20, 1932 in Mathis, the daughter of Leonard L. and Annabelle Salyer Wren. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard L. and Annabelle Salyer Wren; husband, Robert Hugh Hendrick Sr.; three grandchildren and a son-in-law.

Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Bartz of Sinton and Brenda Densman of Keller; sons, Robert H. Hendrick Jr. of Victoria, Johnny Hendrick of Ashdown, Ark., and Clarence Hendrick of Arp; sisters, Virginia Kerr of Columbus and Doris Daniels of Grand Prairie; brothers, L.L. Wren Jr. of Ashdown, Ark., and Ray Wren of Grand Prairie; a sister-in-law, 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Colonial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dan Fultz officiating.

HOLGATE, Ohio – Otila Martinez, 90, died Thursday, April 10, 2008 in Holgate, Ohio, following an extended illness. She was born to Romano and Pinkie Weston Chapa in Annarose, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Gilbert, Earnesto, Frank, Willie Chapa; and three sisters, Leonor Chapa, Olivia Mandell, Lena Garcia.

Survivors include her son, Elmo (Aurora) Garza of Alice, Texas; sister, Emilia Franco of Corpus Christi, Texas; granddaughter, 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will began Tuesday, April 15, 2008 from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Roberson Funeral Home Chapel in Alice, Texas. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Roberson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Chapa Family Cemetery in Annarose, Live Oak County, Texas.

PREMONT, Texas – Luis S. Rodriguez, 71, passed away at a Victoria hospital on Sunday April 13, 2008. He was an insulator in the construction industry.

Survivors include three sons, Eduardo Rodriguez of Miami, Fla., Luis Rodriguez Jr. of Alvin, Texas, and Arnold Rodriguez of Seabrooke, Texas; two daughters, Maria Dahlberg of Houston, Texas, and Annabel Bennett of Premont, Texas; one brother, Jesus Rodriguez of Premont, Texas; three sisters, Ramona Sanchez of Bay City, Texas, Juana Flores of Premont, Texas, and Fita Gutierrez of Corpus Christi, Texas; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Alaniz Funeral Home in Falfurrias, Texas. A chapel service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday April 16, 2009 also at the Alaniz Funeral Home, with interment to follow at the Premont Cemetery in Premont, Texas.

FREER, Texas – Ramon B. Urrutia, 54, a former resident of San Diego, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2008 after a sudden illness. He was the owner of El Mexicano Baker & Restaurant in Freer, Texas.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 35 years, Maria G. Urrutia of Freer, Texas; his sons, Jose N. Urrutia Castanon, Ramon Urrutia Jr., and Francisco J. (Carmina M. Luera) Urrutia, all of Freer, Texas; his daughters, Sara (Juan L.) Vasquez, Gloria I. Urrutia and Beatriz V. Urrutia, all of Freer, Texas; his brothers, Joaquin Urrutia and Emilio Urrutia, both of San Diego, Texas; his sisters, Micaela Hernandez of Austin, Texas, Alejandra Ruiz and Rosa De La Rosa, both of San Diego, Texas; and 11 grandchildren.
