YOAKUM: Walter Cheshire Jr. 79, formerly of Alice, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2008. His wife and daughter were with him when he died peacefully at Stevens Health Care and Rehab Center in Hallettsville.
He was born on February 23, 1929, in Corpus Christi to the late Walter and Zanita Gibson Cheshire.
After graduating from William Adams High School in Alice, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served 7 years as a Radio Communications Officer stationed in Korea during his first enlistment and then in Charleston, South Carolina and Key West Florida. He was in real estate and insurance in Alice and then became an electronics engineer in Kerrville and San Antonio.
Walter was a very loving husband, father and grandfather and really enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He will be missed so much by his loved ones.
Walter was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Cuero. He loved music, playing the piano and singing in the choir.
Walter is survived by his wife, Beverly Bess Clark Cheshire; son, Clark Gibson Cheshire of Yoakum; daughter, Janet Lee Cheshire Bateman and husband Christian of Cuero; grandchildren, Philip Bateman, Joshua Bateman and Michaela Bateman all of Cuero, Zoe Cheshire and Zachariah Cheshire both of Houston.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 10, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church at 302 N. McLeod in Cuero at 4 p.m.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Hill Country Youth Ranch, P.O. Box 67 in Ingram, Texas 78025.

Aurora C. Hernandez, 66, of Alice passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reynaldo and Rosalinda Gutierrez, and her husband, Dagoberto Hernandez, who passed away March 2, 2008.
She is survived by her three children, Jose Dagoberto "Bobby" (Melissa) Hernandez of Alice, Rose Lee (Cirildo) Garcia and Lisa Marie Hernandez, also of Alice; four brothers, Homer (Minnie) Chapa, Hector (Diana) Chapa, Richie (Lela) Chapa and Jose Arturo (Blanca) Chapa, all of Alice; three sisters, Hilda (Adan) Benavides, Lupe (Joe) Garza a Ercilia (Sammy) Alvarado, all of Alice; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Chapel A of Ruben M. Garcia & Sons Funeral Services, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at Alice Cemetery.

HEBBRONVILLE - Ruben Michael Ortiz, 26, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008 in Mirando City.
He was born September 7, 1981 to Juan Manuel Ortiz Sr. and Natalie Arzola of Taft, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his great-great-grandfather, Luz Ortiz.
Survivors include his wife, Martha H. Ortiz of Alice; a son, Ruben Michael Ortiz Jr. of Alice; stepdaughter, Alyssa Hernandez of Alice; mother, Natalie Arzola of Mirando City; father, Juan Manuel Ortiz Sr. of Victoria; three brothers, Juan Manuel Ortiz Jr., Fabien Adam Ortiz and Jesus Pena, all of Mirando City; sister, Mary Alice Ortiz of Mirando City; paternal grandmother, Elida Ortiz of North Carolina; maternal grandparents, Alberto and Alejandra Arzola of Bay City.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the Funeraria Del Angel Howard-Williams in Hebbronville.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2008 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hebbronville. Burial will follow at the New Hebbronville Cemetery.

BEN BOLT - Pedro Vasquez Jr., 82, passed away March 7, 2008 in a Corpus Christi hospital. He was born February 9, 1926 in San Benito, Texas, to Pedro and Aurora Vasquez. He was employed with Bowman Chevrolet in Alice as a paint and body man and was also a ranchman with Dr. J.A. Garcia. He was also a custodian at William Adams High School and was last employed with Compressor Units of Alice.
He was a member of the St. Peters Church and a member of the Crusillistas of Ben Bolt.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maria G. Vasquez of Ben Bolt; a son, Pete Vasquez of Ben Bolt; a daughter, Janie (Regino) Flores of Orange Grove; five grandchildren, Nora Lee Nunez of Orange Grove, Guadalupe "Snapper" (Tameka) Nunez of Garden Ridge, Texas, John Michael, Javier and Aaron Vasquez, all of Ben Bolt; three stepgrandchildren, Belinda (Reynaldo) Gutierrez of Austin, Daniel Flores of Alice and Cynthia (Eloy) Rohrman of Quanico, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Chandre Lorena, Austin Enrique and Taylor Nicole Nunez, all of Garden Ridge, Texas; six step-great-grandchildren, Larissa Flores of Agua Dulce, Ozzie, Chea and Trey Gutierrez of Austin and Justin and Chelsea Rohrman of Quanico, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home in Alice, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 10, 2008 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and burial will follow at Alma and Santos Cemetery in Ben Bolt.
