San Diego slips to 2A

The numbers are in from the University Interscholastic League (UIL) reclassification and district realignment, and while Alice High School stayed in its old district, that district has changed.

Gone is Robstown, which dropped to Class 3A. In their place are Laredo schools Cigarroa, Johnson and Nixon. That changes District 31-4A from a six-team conference to one made up of eight teams.

The district now includes Alice, Calallen, Flour Bluff, Tuloso-Midway, Kingsville, Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo Johnson and Laredo Nixon.

"It's a lot different, but it's fine with us," Alice head football coach and athletic director Brent Davis said.

"There's a little more travel, but that's fine with us. It's still a very competitive district with Calallen and Flour Bluff. Kingsville's always good and then you add the Laredo schools and it's a tough place to play."

Cigarroa, Johnson and Nixon are currently 5A schools. Robstown moved to District 31-3A.

The UIL released its bi-annual reclassification and district realignment this morning.

There were many scenarios for Alice High School leading up to the UIL's announcement, some of which included being moved to a totally new district, but Davis was pleased with the way the district lined up.

"It turned out well for us," Davis said. "Nobody knew what was going to happen, but I was really surprised to see the Laredo schools added to the district. They had to do that though to make 32 districts in 4A."

Elsewhere, there were big changes. San Diego High School moved to Class 2A and is now in 32-2A, which includes other area teams like Premont, Hebbronville and Riviera.
