Amando G. Salaiz “Mando”

Amando G. Salaiz “Mando”, age 72, passed away June 12, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. Mando lost a short battle to Brain Cancer. He was born October 13, 1949 in San Diego, Texas to Cruz and Refugia Salaiz. Mando was a veteran who served in the United States Army. Mando retired from Corpus Christi Army Depot after 30 years of employment. He later worked with the San Diego Independent School District for many years. Mando enjoyed family gathering with his brothers and sisters. He also enjoyed spending time with his brothers and sisters-in-law and their families. Mando enjoyed relaxing and watching television and was known to many for his love of his quiet time. Mando was loving husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa, uncle, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Mando had a special bond with his 3 sons: Mando, Andy, +Adrian especially his daughter Debra. Mando helped raise his wife’s siblings after the passing of their beloved mother. He had a special bond with them. Maria Elena always referred to him as dad. Mando and Maria have also helped raise their grandson Aiden.

Mando was preceded in death by his parents, Cruz and Refugia Salaiz; son, Adrian Salaiz; his brother, Pedro Salaiz; and brothers-in-law, Clemente Gonzalez and Alonzo Garcia.

Mando is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maria I. Salaiz of San Diego; two sons, Amando Andres “Andy” Salaiz and Armando Salaiz (Ida Arriaga) both of San Diego; one daughter, Debra Reyes (Russell) of San Diego; two brothers, Ricardo Salaiz (Annabel) of Austin and Jose Salaiz of Houston; two sisters, Tomasita Garcia of San Diego and Juanita Cadena (Noe) of Robstown; sisters-in-law, Petra Schultz (Don) of San Diego, Maria Elena Salinas (Albert) of Premont, Dolores Garza (Rey) of Calallen, Elpidia Marquez of Alice, Sylvia Flores of Corpus Christi, Oralia Garza of San Diego, Jose Ricardo Gonzalez (Elda) of Premont, and Arturo Gonzalez (Rosie) of Alice; 16 grandchildren, Armando Raul Salaiz, Aiden Salaiz, Justin Reyes, Brianna Reyes, Ryan Reyes, Kaitlyn Salaiz, Miguel Salaiz, Christian Salaiz, Amyrah Salaiz, Madeline Lara, Adrian Salaiz Jr., Adrissa Salaiz, Adriella Salaiz, Isaiah Salaiz, Sinco Salaiz, and Kazandra Lozano; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 20, 2022 from 5 till 9 p.m. at Rosas Funeral Home Chapel with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. that evening. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in San Diego. Burial to follow at San Diego Cemetery #2.

The Salaiz and Reyes family would like to send a special thank you to Dr Raza, Neurosurgeon and his team of Drs and nurses at MD Anderson, the Palliative Unit and their team of Doctors and nurses at MD Anderson, Dr Majd, Neuro-Oncology and Medical Team Hospice and their RN Bianca Rae Litchenberger, thank you for all the care you provided to my husband/our father. The family would also like to thank everyone for all the phones calls, text messages, food and comfort provided during this difficult time.
