Friday, May 30 marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter, as friends, family, colleagues, and community members gathered to say farewell to a man who has worn his badge with honor and heart—Chief Deputy Robert Waldrop.
After 14 years of dedicated service to our county, Chief Waldrop is taking the next step in his public service career, accepting a new position with the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol. While this transition brings a sense of excitement for what lies ahead, it also brings a deep sense of gratitude—and yes, a touch of sadness—as we reflect on all he has meant to this community.
Throughout his time with the county, Chief Waldrop has been a steady hand, a fearless leader, and a source of strength in both challenging and triumphant times. His leadership was not just about titles or ranks—it was about people. He mentored younger deputies, stood shoulder to shoulder with his team during critical moments, and carried himself with integrity that earned the respect of everyone who had the privilege to serve beside him.
Friday’s farewell was filled with emotion—laughter at shared stories, pride in his accomplishments, and heartfelt appreciation for a man who never hesitated to go the extra mile. Whether it was supporting victims, leading operations, or simply being the calm in the storm, Chief Waldrop did it all with humility and resolve.
“As he takes on his new role with DPS Highway Patrol, we know he will bring the same dedication and excellence that made him a pillar in our community. And while he may be stepping away from the department, this isn’t goodbye—it’s simply see you soon,” said Jim Wells County Sheriff Joseph Guy Baker.
Family and friends are already counting down the days to when they’ll see him again. Until then, they sent him off with respect, pride, and the very best wishes for success in this exciting new chapter.
