Agua Poquita Soil and Water Conservation District #321 (Agua Poquita SWCD) proudly joins communities across Texas in recognizing Soil and Water Stewardship Week, set for April 27 through May 4, 2025. In collaboration with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) and the Association of Texas Soil & Water Conservation Districts, this year’s campaign centers on the theme: “Home is Where the Habitat Is.”

Stewardship Week aims to raise awareness about the importance of conserving our natural resources—not only for people but also for the diverse wildlife that calls Texas home. This year, the spotlight is on native habitats and how their preservation is essential to the health of our ecosystems, environment, and communities.

Native ecosystems are vital for maintaining Texas’ rich biodiversity. These habitats:

  • Filter pollutants for clean air and water
  • Stabilize ecosystems, helping us adapt to natural disasters and climate change
  • Store carbon, reducing the impact of global warming
  • Enrich the natural beauty of our state, drawing tourism and recreation
  • Support agriculture and forestry, strengthening our economy

From the rolling prairies and dense forests to scenic rivers and peaceful wetlands, each Texas habitat plays a role in supporting both wildlife and human life. Stewardship Week is a time to reflect on our responsibility to protect these resources and preserve the beauty and function of our environment.

Since 1939, the TSSWCB and local conservation districts like Agua Poquita SWCD have worked alongside private landowners, farmers, and ranchers to promote voluntary conservation efforts across the state. Their work has helped maintain soil health, conserve water, and protect vital habitats.

This year’s campaign calls on Texans to recognize that “Home is Where the Habitat Is”—emphasizing that our actions, particularly on private lands, play a direct role in shaping the environmental legacy we leave behind.

Whether you’re a landowner, student, gardener, or just someone who enjoys the outdoors, your support and awareness can make a difference. Agua Poquita SWCD encourages everyone to get involved in local conservation efforts and help spread the message about the importance of preserving Texas’ natural habitats.
