Two of Alice High School’s strongest student-athletes are taking their talents to the next level. Seniors Ramiro Cantu and Orlando Cantu, both state powerlifting qualifiers, officially signed to join the Texas A&M University–Kingsville Powerlifting Club Team during a special ceremony held Friday, April 11, at the Coyote Powerhouse weight room. The event was filled with emotion and pride as coaches, family members, and friends gathered to witness the next chapter in these Coyotes’ journey.

The signing comes on the heels of an incredible season, where the pair represented Alice at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) State Championship. Ramiro Cantu stood out in Abilene, earning a 3rd place medal in the 242-pound weight class, a testament to his relentless work ethic and strength.

The Coyote boys team as a whole delivered an outstanding showing at state — setting 11 personal record lifts and improving their total scores across the board.

“We’re extremely proud of Ramiro and Orlando,” said Coach Tinker Villarreal. “They’ve both led by example and inspired their teammates with their discipline, determination, and heart. TAMUK is gaining two powerful lifters and even better young men.”

Congratulations to Ramiro and Orlando on this exciting milestone — the entire Alice community is behind you as you continue to make gains and represent the Coyote legacy at the collegiate level!
