On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Brush Country CASA, the Department of Family and Protective Services, and the Jim Wells Child Welfare Board came together for a moving Candlelight Vigil outside the Jim Wells County Courthouse. The vigil, which began at 6 p.m., was held to honor and support the children in our community and to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.
A large crowd of community members gathered to show their unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of children. Their presence made a significant impact, reinforcing the importance of standing united against child abuse and supporting the prevention of harm to the most vulnerable members of society.
Guest speakers included Alice ISD Superintendent Dr. Anysia Trevino, Jim Wells County Sheriff Joseph Guy Baker, County Clerk J.C. Perez III, and several other local leaders, who shared powerful messages of hope, commitment, and support for children in need. Their speeches emphasized the importance of continued vigilance, education, and advocacy in preventing child abuse.

In addition to the vigil, pinwheels and banners have been displayed at the Jim Wells, Brooks, and Kleberg County Courthouses, symbolizing the collective commitment to protecting children from harm. The pinwheels serve as a visual reminder of the community’s dedication to child abuse prevention.
The Candlelight Vigil is a key event in a series of observances throughout the month of April, with two more vigils scheduled in the coming weeks:
- April 15, 2025 – Brooks County Courthouse | 6:00 PM
- April 22, 2025 – Kleberg County Courthouse | 6:00 PM
As we continue to observe Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month, the community is invited to join in these upcoming vigils to honor victims and promote awareness shinning a light on prevention and stand against child abuse, creating a safer, stronger community for our children.
