In a welcome announcement for the residents of Jim Wells County, Judge Pete Trevino Jr. shared that the county is no longer experiencing drought-like conditions. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which measures the severity of drought, has stabilized at an encouraging 301—well below the critical threshold of 500. Just a week ago, the KBDI had soared to a concerning 668.
The significant improvement is attributed to the recent rains that have provided much-needed relief to the city of Alice and surrounding areas. In a statement shared on social media, Judge Trevino expressed his gratitude for the rain but also reminded residents to remain vigilant. “While we are in a much better place, I urge everyone to prioritize safety,” he said. “The weather is unpredictable, with high winds still a concern, so please exercise caution.”
The judge particularly emphasized the importance of monitoring any burn sites to ensure they are completely extinguished, as dry conditions can still present hazards despite the recent rainfall.

This relief comes as a significant step forward, and the county looks forward to continued cooperation in maintaining safety and preparedness as we move through the unpredictable weather patterns of the season.
