Hebbronville’s Alexandra Gomez and Avri Darley never wavered and proved that all their hard work, the early mornings and sacrifices really paid off by winning the state powerlifting championship Thursday, Mar. 13 in their respective weight divisions in Edinburg.  

Alexandra is a three-time state champion in the 97-pound-weight class. Gomez also picked up titles in the best squat lightweight, state best deadlift lightweight and state best lightweight lifter.  

Avri is a two-time state champion in the 105-pound weight class.

Their coaches Eric Montalvo, Alicia Pena and Debra Gomez have taught them so much about perseverance and staying mentally strong when facing fierce competition.

Overall, the Lady Longhorns finished in third place.
