Commander Gilbert Trevino of the United Veterans Burial Association and members were at the Alice Food Pantry at 311 East Main Street Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 5 donating a check for a thousand dollars to help those in need.

“We want to help alleviate hunger in this community. There’s a need for people being insecure about food locally and worldwide and what worries us veterans, are the children that go hungry every day because there’s not enough food on the table,” said Trevino.

As a group, the members voted to donate to the Alice Food Pantry one thousand dollars to help families in Alice and in Jim Wells County.

“We hope that by participating in something like this, maybe other organizations will step up and do the same. So, please if you have money to spare, donate to the food pantry here in Alice,” added Trevino.

Food Pantry President Bonnie Whitley was present to accept the check.

“We don’t have any employees here, we’re all volunteers. We work very hard to help those in need. This is our calling to be a blessing to others. I can tell you this, one-thousand dollars will buy five-thousand dollars’ worth of food from the food bank,” said Whitley.

The United Veterans Burial Association and the Alice Food Pantry are both non-profit organizations surviving on donations.
