Located at the old Hillcrest Elementary location,1400 Morningside Drive. A portable building on the side of where classrooms and the library used to be, is where families in need go to for clothing. But how does it all work?
“Usually, the way we do it is that the social workers at each campus and so they’re the ones that see whenever there’s a need that a student is needing clothing. They’re pretty much right there in the know. Then they contact us and what we do is ask them to give us sizes and we go and pull whatever sizes we can,” said Dr. Garcia with the Coyote Corner.
Some parents have gone to the Central Office and left notes with the names of the students and sizes with a contact number.
“What I’ve done is gone and pulled a few things, so I’ll be calling those parents in the following days and ask them to meet me over at the Coyote Corner and I’ll bag up some of the clothing that I picked out for them. There are different ways that it can be done,” said Dr. Garcia.
When it comes to the age group to qualify, Dr. Garcia said from the youngest to those in their senior year.
“All school aged groups and we even, to tell you the truth carry pampers. If a family says their children go to school and have a little one, we’re able to provide that too. Also, some of the special groups at our campuses, some of them are not potty trained, we provide diapers for them. We provide everything you could imagine. We have shoes, jeans, pants, shirts, laundry detergent, pampers, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap. As much as we can provide for the students, we have,” she said.
If families are unable to get a hold of the social worker at their campus, call the Alice Independent School District main office 361-664-0981 and ask for Dr. Garcia.
