Alice was off and running in the first half, building up a lead into the second half that lasted to the end of the game to pull out a win over Victoria West 36-25.
The Coyotes were lead by sophomore quarterback Lucien Cruz, who in the first two quarters, went 11 for 15 for 206 yards via the air.
Following Cruz’s groove were wide out Landon Rodriguez with 4 catches for 75 yards, running back Roel Gonzalez III had 2 catches for 67 yards and 1 touchdown, wide out Justin Arellano went for 2 catches for 68 yards and 1 touchdown and wide out Matthew Carrillo with 3 catches for 31 yards.
They all stepped it up in the first half and kept it all gas no brakes through the second half.
The defense shined with hit sticks through out the ball game from Gene Treviño, Landen Brunston, Tyler Rosales. All the Coyote defense played tough and confident for 48 minutes.
“We saw a lot of good things from the defense and played a lot of different kids, which I think responded well,” head Coyote coach JR Castellano said. “On offense, our young quarterback had some great throws and ran the ball effectively. Saw good things from our reviewers as far as catching, running and blocking. Our running game was effective through out the game so overall we did a lot of good things.”
The coach added how week three’s opponent was a huge challenge.
“It didn’t get any easier for us because Victoria West had a lot of athletes. They’re well coached. They were big up front, they spread the ball out and they carry an impressive aggressive style defense. We did a good job in containing them,” Castellano said.
Alice (2-1) will be packing their bags for a road trip to Flour Bluff (1-2) Friday, Sept 15. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
