Coyote Cross Country win annual Border Olympics
LAREDO - The Alice Coyote cross country program had another great showing this weekend. Both the girls and boys won the 1A-4A championship at the 4th Annual Border Olympics in Laredo.

TAMU-CC partners with Coastal Bend Blood Center to launch Collegiate Hero Program
CORPUS CHRISTI – Every two seconds, someone in the United States requires life-saving donated blood or platelets. To meet this need, the Coastal Bend Blood Center (CBBC) has partnered with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to turn Islanders into Collegiate Heroes. The program was launched on Aug. 29 with an on-campus blood drive.
David Berry Hale
David Berry Hale, 82, resident of Alice, TX and Greenwood, SC, husband of Julie Sheldon Hale, passed away Monday, August 29, 2022, at Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont. Born February 20, 1940, in Arp, TX, he was a son of the late Jewell Lawrence “Jude” Hale and Thelma Odessa Covington Hale Glass.

Consuelo G. Benavides, 78, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at an Alice Nursing home surrounded by her family. Consuelo, better known by her family as “Maestra” (Teacher), was born on June 11, 1944 in Palito Blanco, Texas to Paulino V. Gonzalez and Estela Ruiz Gonzalez. Consuelo enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved dancing, scratching her lottery tickets, watching novelas, and talking on the phone. Most of all, she loved caring for her grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving person and always full of happiness. She was a small structure woman build, but with a big heart. She will be deeply missed by family and friends as she walks through the pearly gates and arrives at her mansion in heaven. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pablo and Estela Gonzalez; the father of her children, Teofilo Benavides Sr.; a great-grandchild, Ismael Alvarez Jr. and a nephew, David Andrew Villagran. She is survived by her children: one son, Teo (Prissy) Benavides of Alice; four daughters, Rosa Linda (Sal) Arredondo of Alice, Irene (Israel) Garza of Alice, Irma (Rene) Gomez of Alice, and Cynthia (Joe) Ramirez of San Antonio; five brothers, Valdemar R. Gonzalez (Diana) of Austin, Ruben R. Gonzalez (Margie) of Alice, Conrado R. Gonzalez (Blanca) of Alice, Ricardo R. Gonzalez (Eliza) of Alice, and Arturo R. Astros ace Verlander placed on IL with calf injury
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander, a leading candidate for the AL Cy Young Award, has been placed on the injured list with a right calf injury. The team announced the move Tuesday and said that an MRI done on the calf Monday revealed fascial disruption, but no muscle fiber disruption.
Unvaccinated NBA players, staff must test weekly for COVID
Unvaccinated NBA players and team personnel must submit to weekly COVID-19 testing this season, the league told its clubs in a memo Tuesday. There will be certain exceptions to that mandate, the league said, such as when the unvaccinated person is considered to have been “recently recovered” from COVID-19.
LeBron James inks 2-year, $97.1 million deal with Lakers
LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension through the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Lakers, his agent announced Wednesday. Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul said the league-maximum deal makes James the highest- paid player in NBA history.
