Maria Isabel “Chavela” Barton, 92 years of age, passed away on May 18, 2022, at her residence. Maria Isabel Canales Barton was born on September 27, 1929, in Benavides, Texas to Albino and Cleotilde Cadena Canales. Chavela, as we all referred to her, was a Certified Nurse Aide and work as a nurse for the Benavides I.S.D. for many years. She was a former board member of the Community Action of Benavides, Texas, and a past member of Duval County Historical Association. Chavela had a passion for family history and researching and studying her family heritage. She enjoyed travelling and visiting with relatives. Chavela enjoyed crocheting as her hobby.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Barton and one son, Andrew Alvin Barton.

Survivors include one son, Robert Jacob Barton of Garden Grove, California; one daughter, Annie Marie Barton of Benavides, Texas and six grandchildren: Bryan Robert Hall of Harlingen, Texas, Cynthia Herrera of Orlando Florida, Robert Andrew Barton of Austin, Texas, Kimberly Barton of Brownsville, Texas, Woodrow Barton, and Ernest Barton both of Garden Grove, California and four great-grandchildren. Other survivors include nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, May 30, 2022, at 3:00 P.M. at Rosas Funeral Home. A prayer service and Celebration of her life will be held at 6:00 P.M. that same evening. Services will conclude with the chapel closing at 9:00 P.M. The Inurnment of Cremains will follow at a later date with a private service at the Benavides Cemetery.
