As the promise of summer inches ever closer, many Texans are eagerly planning their summer travel adventures with friends and family. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the 16-week period between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend has historically been one of the busiest for traveling domestically in the U.S., with 657 million long-distance trips made during this time in 2001.
Normally, taxes are due on April 15. This year, filers got a few more days to submit their returns. Because Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C. holiday, was observed this year on April 15, tax filers got until April 18 to get their returns completed.

Maria Alicia Olivares, better known as Alicia, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Petra R. Flores, 95, passed away peacefully in the am of April 12, 2022, as she listened to the morning mass at the San Juan Nursing Home, San Juan Texas. She was born January 2, 1927 in Waco, Texas to Santiago Rivera and Dionicia Curiel. Petra was a devoted housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was also a devoted follower of Christ and would pray devoutly for her family’s intentions. She was patient, kind, and loving as she made each one of us feel special.
SAN DIEGO - Raul M. Olivarez, age 61, passed away April 15, 2022, in San Diego, Texas with his family around his bed side, after his 3 year battle with cancer. He was born January 20, 1961, in Alice, Texas to Alejandro Olivarez and Rosenda Martinez. Raul was a floor hand in the oil industry and had a gift for carpentry work as well. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as horseback riding, bull riding, riding motorcycles, hunting, and bonfires. He also enjoyed dancing and training horses and was known as an animal whisperer. He will be remembered for his unconditional love for his family and spending quality time with them and being a jokester. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In an annual event, volunteers with the Nueces County Community Partners Board, also known as the Rainbow Room, recently assembled 124 Easter baskets specializing in age range from toddler to teen. The organization wanted to make sure that all of the Nueces County children in foster care would have something special for Easter Sunday.
The residents of Duval County hit the polls at the March 1 Primary Election, but the final results left three Democratic Party races in a runoff. Duval County canvassed their votes on March 10 and a recount was conducted for the County Commissioner precinct 4 race, the Duval County Election Administration Office announced the final results.
