KINGSVILLE — The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team entered Saturday’s night home opener with high hopes of upsetting #6 West Texas A&M, but it was not to be in a 55-35 win for the Buffaloes in front of 8,219 fans.

The Javelinas (3-2, 0-1) and Buffaloes (5-0, 1-0) traded punts to start the game.  When the Hoggies got the ball back they embarked on a 12-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by senior Billy Garza’s (Brownsville/Porter HS) 16-yard scoring strike on a third down to sophomore Damian Couthren (Bastrop/Bastrop HS) in the corner of the endzone with 5:06 to play in the quarter.  The Buffaloes would respond with their own 12-play drive, but it would end with a 34-yard field goal by James Chandler.  The Javelinas led after the first quarter 7-3.

The second quarter belonged to the Buffs as they scored 28 unanswered points.  Quarterback Keith Null fired three scoring strikes and Wayne McKnight rambled. in from eight yards out to make the scoring 31-7 in favor of West Texas heading into the half.  Null finished the half 20-of-23 for 261 yards and three touchdowns.

“You just can’t play 30 minutes and beat a football team like this,” said Texas A&M-Kingsville head coach Bo Atterberry.  “We didn’t play well in the first half.  We came out and played well in the second half.”
