Tuloso-Midway High School hosted their 4th annual Warrior Classic Powerlifting Championships last Saturday, bringing 26 schools from around the state to the event.
Throughout the day, students competed in squat, bench press and deadlift against each other under their designated weight class. After combining the best lift in each event, the top five lifters of each class were awarded points that went toward their team totals.
Teams received seven points for a first place finish, five for second place, three for third, two for fourth and one point for fifth place.
In the boys competition, Orange Grove High School took third place with a total score 16 points. Oscar Ortiz finished in first place in the 220-pound weight class with a total combined weight of 1,385 pounds lifted.
Johnny Guerra took second place in the 132-pound weight class, lifting a total weight of 850 pounds. Richard Brown finished in fourth place in the same weight class with 835 pounds in total weight lifted.
Oscar Ortiz received fourth place in the super heavyweight class, lifting 1,165 pound in total combined weight.
The San Diego High School boys team finished in seventh place with a total of 12 team points. Gilbert Sanchez took second place in the 114-pound weight class, lifting a total weight of 805 pounds. Rene Rubalcava also took second in the 123-pound weight class with 795 pounds in combined weight lifted.
Marty Saenz and Roger Rubalcava both finished in fifth place. Saenz lifted a total weight of 1,125 pounds in the 181-pound weight class weight a total weight of 1,125 pounds, while Rubalcava competed in the 220-pound weight class, lifting 1,240 pounds.
Alice High School received 13th place, receiving five points total, with Justin Garcia taking second place in the 181-pound weight class, lifting a total combined weight of 1,285 pounds.
Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco High School finished in 17th place with one point. Jesus Benavides finished in fourth place in the 242-pound weight class and Gabriel Ramirez took fifth place in the 132-pound weight class. Benavides lifted a combined total weight of 1,245 pounds and Ramirez lifted a total of 830 pounds.
In the girls competition, San Diego finished in second place with 32 total team points. Alyssa Perales and Natalie Luna both took first place in their repective weight class. Perales lifted a total weight of 820 pounds in the 220-pound weight class and Luna lifted 1,080 pounds combined weight in the 220-plus pound weight class.
San Diego had four third-place finishes, starting with Junelle Vasquez in the 105-pound weight class lifting 530 pounds total weight. Spring Garza placed in third in the 114-pound weight class with 475 pounds lifted.
Dayna Garcia and Tiffany Cantu also placed third in their classes, with Garcia lifting 705 pounds total weight in the 148-pound weight class and Cantu lifting a combined weight of 820 pound in the 198-pound weight class.
Kathy Perez and Monique Soliz both received fourth place. Perez lifted 565 pounds in the 114-pound weight class, while Soliz lifted 775 pounds in the 181-pound weight class.
Marissa Seanz finished in fifth place in the 132-pound weight class, lifting a total weight of 535 pounds. Vanessa Garcia also place fifth, lifting 730 pounds in the 181-pound weight class. Ben Bolt took seventh place with a total of eight points. Juliana Barrera finished in second place in the 220-pound weight class with combined weight of 575 pounds lifted, and Gloria Gutierrez took third place in the 123-pound weight class, lifting a total weight of 575 pounds.
Orange Grove did not place and Alice did not compete in the girls competition.
