San Diego led until the fourth quarter
Staff report, Alice Echo-News Journal
For three quarters Tuesday night, it appeared San Diego's determination and hustle were once again going to out-do another opponent.
Instead, the Vaqueros, winners of 31 games this season, fell short — just one point short of the Gonzales Apaches, 61-60, in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals. It was only San Diego's third loss this season.
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 17 in 3A, led 9-6 after the first quarter, and pulled away from the 13th-ranked Apaches to a 27-16 advantage at halftime.
San Diego led until Gonzales took the lead midway through the fourth period. The Vaqueros were led by Joseph Martinez, who scored a game-high 27 points.
The West Oso Bears were no strangers to the Orange Grove Bulldogs.
In District 30-3A where Orange Grove was a runner-up this season, it was West Oso who was the district champion.
The Bears were just as tough Tuesday night in the Class 3A regional quarterfinal playoffs. West Oso used a big first quarter to build a lead which Orange Grove was never able to overcome. When it was over, the Bulldogs were on the short end of a 60-48 decision.
Cody Winstead scored 20 for Orange Grove. Colin Delaune and Josh Prado each scored nine. Delaune and Jordan Huber had two three pointers each.
The Bulldogs finished their season 23-11, while West Oso bettered its record to 26-6 and earned a trip to the Region IV tournament Texas A&M University-Kingsville this Friday.
