The rain stayed away from Bobby Cuellar Park Monday night long enough to set up a semifinal match-up between Hebbronville and Falfurrias.
The two teams won elimination games to advance in the District 22 Little League tournament in Alice. The two teams will also be back in town to play at 6:30 p.m. tonight. The winner of that semifinal game will take on the loser of tonight's late game between the tournament's only undefeated teams - Alice American and Alice National.
In Monday's action, Hebbronville knocked out Freer, 6-4. The Freer all-stars rallied in their final at-bat, but stranded two men to lose the game. In the late game, Hebbronville scored their winning run in the final inning to eliminate Bishop-Driscoll.
While the rainy weather wasn't a factor in this tournament, it was elsewhere. In Bishop, where the 9- and 10-year-old tournament is winding down, the rain forced tournament officials to move games to Falfurrias. Once the field was settled, Falfurrias beat Hebbronville and San Diego beat Freer.
In softball, the Alice all-stars are ready to take the field for what will be their first game in the Junior League tournament.
The 13-and 14-year-old Alice team had a first-round bye and will take on Falfurrias, which was a 19-8 winner against San Diego at Alice's Optimist Park Monday night.
The winner of the Junior League tournament here will be in Alice again next week for a sectionals tournament with teams from San Antonio, Laredo, Brownsville, Corpus Christi and the Alice-Kingsville area.
Alice's 11-year-old all star team advance at the District 22 tournament and will play in the sectionals tournament beginning July 9 here in Alice.
