SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Vaqueros rushed to a 28-0 win over John Paul II in front of a home crowd Friday night.

The Vaqueros lit up the scoreboard throughout the game, with Michael Perales hitting the end zone first on a two-yard run with 5:27 remaining in the first. The point after was no good, putting the Vaqueros up over the Centurions, 6-0.

The Vaqueros threatened to score again at the start of the second quarter, only to have quarterback Albert Lopez intercepted in the end zone by defender Nick Vidal.

The Vaqueros were able to hold the Centurions to negative yardage, and began their next drive on John Paul’s 47-yard line. A Perales 16-yard run set the Vaqueros up at the nine, and Mario Madrigal took the team to the one-yard line. Bubba Soliz punched it in on second- and-goal, bringing the score to 12-0. Soliz returned to the end zone for the two-point conversion with 2:20 remaining in the first half.

The Centurions had their first successful drive of the half, only to see it come to an end with an interception by Vaquero Rocky Gonzalez, leaving San Diego up 14-0 at the break.

Gonzalez continued to plague the Centurions in the second half, starting the third quarter with a 20-yard kick-off return to the Vaqueros’ own 37-yard line. Three downs and a face-mask penalty later, the Vaqueros found themselves at first-and-one on the five-yard line. Gonzalez dashed into the end zone to bring the score to 20-0. The point after was no good.

At nearly mid-field, the Centurions elected to punt on their next possession, pinning the Vaqueros at their own 10-yard line.

Perales and Gonzalez broke out of the backfield for runs of 18 and 10 yards, respectively.

Five plays later, the Vaqueros found themselves once again at first and goal.

Gonzalez’s two-yard scamper into the end zone capped off a 90-yard drive by the Vaqueros with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter. The team was successful on its two-point try, bringing the final score to 28-0.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter.

The Vaqueros improve their record to 3-1 and head to La VIlla next Friday.
