Escoto Memorial mile honors late Alice runner who won state

The Hub City Relay is looking for runners to participate in its annual Escoto Memorial Mile Run during the track and field meet in Memorial Stadium March 8. This race is dedicated in memory of S.B. Escoto.

Escoto ran track for Alice High School from 1946 to 1948. In 1948, he won the state title in the mile run, setting a new state record with a time of 4:37. He signed with Tulane University and ran cross country for the Green Wave.

This is the Escoto Memorial Mile Run. Anyone interested in participating in this event can call 361-660-2000 ext. 1 or come by the AHS athletic office.

The winner of the event will have a $ 1,000 scholarship presented to a graduating senior from AHS in their name. This scholarship is underwritten by Antonio Pruneda Bill, owner of Dan's Processing. Winner's name will be placed on a plaque at the High School Athletic Department.

Qualifications to participate are runners must be a high school graduate and must have all forms filled out and turned in before the deadline.

The deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 29 for all applications to be turned in at the athletic department.

The Hub City Relays have dozens of high school varsity and junior varsity teams scheduled to compete.
