Kingsville — Javelina junior Tremaine Barefield (Victoria Memorial) won the long jump with a team-best effort of 23-1.25 to lead the Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field team at the Javelina Invitational. He also finished second in the triple jump, just a quarter of an inch of season best with a leap of 47-6.25.
Junior thrower Abel Garcia also had a big day, winning the hammer throw, finishing second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.
Garcia's throw of 162-6 in the hammer is his best throw this season.
Rene Garcia (H.M. King) finished second in the 400-meter dash and joined the trio of Earsel Montgomery, Anthony Ayala and Dustin Appling to finish second in the 4 x 400-meter relay with a season-best time of 3:19.36. Rene's younger brother Ozzie Garcia (H.M. King) finished second in the high jump with a best effort of 6-foot-7.
On the women's side, Cathryn Prataka finished second in the high jump with a season-best effort of 5-4.25 and Cynthia Turner finished second in the 100-meter hurdles. Mary Sampson ran a season-best time of 26.19 finishing sixth in the 200-meter dash into a stiff breeze. Erica

One stadium record was established when University of Texas women's pole vaulter Ashley Laughlin won the event with a leap of 13-4.25.
