The Banquete Bulldogs needed a win and a little help Friday to make the District 32-2A playoffs, and the Bulldogs got both, trouncing the Riviera Seahawks 46-8 while Hebbronville fell to Santa Rosa 7-6.
The Bulldogs needed the home win and either Hebbronville or Freer to lose Friday to secure a playoff spot. With Santa Rosa narrowly beating Hebbronville Friday, Banquete will play the Refugio Bobcats Friday night in Kingsville.
The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 4-2 record in district play, and 7-3 overall.
The Bulldogs played with a purpose Friday and thoroughly out-played Riviera, who came into the game with an 0-5 district record. The Bulldogs did not know they would make the playoffs until they had won and Hebbronville subsequently lost.
The game was marred by numerous turnovers and 24 penalties, several of them costly.
The Bulldogs put together an impressive opening drive on six running plays and advanced the ball to the Riviera 5-yard line where fullback Jacob Harris fumbled. The ball was recovered by Riviera.
Banquete had great field possession on its second possession, starting at the Seahawks' 32-yardline where Karabanoff ran it up the middle on the first play of the drive for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked, making it 6-0.
Later in the first quarter, Seahawk quarterback Jacob Hubert ran a keeper to pick up the Seahawks' first first down, but he fumbled the ball when he was hit at Riviera's 39-yard line as Banquete regained possession.
In the opening of the second quarter, the Bulldogs had the ball at the Riviera 9-yard line when Karabonoff took the next snap and ran it in for the touchdown.
Harris ran in the two-point conversion, making it 14-0 Banquete.
On the Seahawks' next possession, Riviera went three and out, forcing a punting situation from their own 22-yard line. After the botched snap that went over Hubert's head, he recovered the ball and threw it out of bounds from the end zone under pressure.
Hubert was called for intentional grounding and a safety was called, making it 16-0 Banquete.
On the Bulldogs' next possession, Banquete had the ball at Seahawk 9-yard-line when halfback Jordan Hernandez ran it up the middle for a touchdown.
The extra point was good, making it 23-0 Banquete with 4:38 left in the second quarter.
After another Riviera fumble on their next possession, the Bulldogs got the ball back.
On first-and-16 at the Seahawk 21-yard line, Lopez threw an interception and Riviera regained possession, but made nothing out of Banquete's turnover.
With four seconds left in the half, Matthew Rodriguez kicked a 29-yard filed goal to make it 26-0 Banquete at the half.
Banquete had the ball with 9 minutes left in the third quarter when Karabanoff punched it for a touchdown from five yards out.
The extra point was wide right, making it 32-0 Banquete.
Later in the third quarter, Gonzalez picked off a fourth down pass from Riviera's Hubert at Banquete's 10-yardline.
On the next play from the Banquete 18-yardline, Serna ran up the middle and through the Riviera defense before being caught from behind at the Seahawk's 5-yardline after a 77-yard run.
Serna took the next snap up the middle for the touchdown with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.
It was 39-0 Banquete after the successful extra point.
The Seahawks finally scored early in the fourth quarter on a quarterback keeper from the Banquete 3-yard line. After succeeding with a two-point conversion, Banquete was well ahead, 39-8.
With 8 minutes left in the game, Serna ran it up the middle seven yards for a touchdown, making it 46-8 Banquete.
