Alice Coyotes need two wins to end playoff drought

Coyotes have HMK Friday in stadium; Robstown follows

It's come down to this lose one and Alice's is done.

With only two games left in the regular season, the Coyotes' hopes of getting into the postseason rest on the team winning out.

That means Alice needs a victory against the Kingsville Brahmas here in Memorial Stadium Friday night and then a win against Robstown on the road next week.

At the same time, Kingsville is also playing for a possible playoff bid. A win against Alice Friday night would give the Brahmas three District 31-4A wins and would clinch at least third-place regardless of their season finale against Calallen on Nov. 9.

Barring a massive meltdown in these next two weeks, Calallen and Flour Bluff are No. 1 and 2 in the district.

Despite a strong effort Friday night, the Alice Coyotes lost to Flour Bluff, 42-21.

Kingsville may have the winning records like those of Calallen and Flour Bluff, but their team is scrappy.

This season is similiar to last season which ended with Kingsville in third place in the 31-4A standings and in the postseason. The Brahmas began this season slowly by losing three of their first four games. After that, they reversed their fortunes and won three of their last four.

Kingsville's only loss in its last four games came in a 37-13 loss to the Flour Bluff Hornets. In this four-game stretch, the Brahmas have a non-district win against Corpus Christi and back-to-back district wins against Robstown and Flour Bluff.

On Friday, the Brahmas finished with 307 yards of offense, and managed to hold the Tuloso-Midway Warriors to 160 yards in the 30-12 win.

Klye Cantu was the Brahmas' go-to guy. Against the Warriors porous defense, Cantu had 17 carries and finished with 191 yards, including touchdown runs of two and 80 yards.

Art Hayes had 11 carries, but was shutdown to only 40 yards.

Randy Vega completed four passes for 61 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to Travis King.

For the season, Cantu has 10 rushing touchdowns, while Vega has thrown for 10 touchdowns.
