The Alice High School girls cross country team is headed to regionals after taking second at the District 29-5A championships Friday at West Guth Park.

Even more impressive is the fact that the girls' team includes all underclassmen.

The Lady Coyotes were led by freshman Rita Castillo, who placed fourth individually, and junior Tania Lillich, who placed seventh. Sophomore Jaclyn Villarreal placed 13th and sophomore Ashley Arellano was 17th. The rest of the team included sophomores Paris Chalfant, 21; Samantha Pierce, 27; and Kaitlyn Soliz, 31.

Castillo and Lillich were named 29-5A All-District First Team. Villarreal and Arellano were Second Team All-District.
Samuel Salinas and Guadalupe Garcia are representing the Alice boys at regionals. The placed sixth and seventh respectively. The rest of the Alice boys team included junior Patrick Saenz, 23; freshman Francisco Castillo, 27; sophomore Angel Perez, 29; sophomore Aiden Salinas, 36; and senior Rolando Pena, 37.

Salinas and Garcia were Second Team All-District picks.

Beyonce Hernandez of Gregory-Portland won the girls varsity race with a time of 18:27.44. Jesse Rodriguez of Laredo Martin won the boys varsity race with a time of 15:24.13.

The Region IV Cross Country Championships is Monday, Oct. 22 at TAMUCC’s Jack Dugan Stadium.
