Alice Armor Baseball is honoring a local icon on the sport.

Longtime baseball player, coach and supporter Rene Zarate of Alice will be given a lifetime achievement award during the youth baseball organization’s first banquet and dance fundraiser later this month.

The event is planned for Saturday, Oct. 20 at the K.C. Hall in Alice. The banquet include dinner, a silent auction and a presentation of the club’s players, as well as, the team’s goals and expectations. Entertainment is being provided by Jerry & the Ruf-Nex.

Zarate was signed by Major League Baseball before serving his country in the U.S. military. He returned to Alice and was a baseball standout. Later, he became a youth baseball coach for generations of Alice ball players. He remains an avid fan of Alice baseball.

Alice native and professional baseball pitching coach Bobby Cuellar and Alice coach Nick Alvarado are scheduled to be speakers at the event.

The Alice Armor Select Baseball program, now in its fourth year, includes a 14-and-under select baseball team which participates in regional and statewide tournaments. As 13 year olds last year, the team won the Houston Astros World Series Festival Tournament in Houston. They ended last season ranked No. 1 in Texas in their age group and division by United States Speciality Sports Association (USSSA). Alice Armor was also ranked fifth nationally.

So far this season, Alice Armor has won tournaments in August and September at the Portland Sports Complex. The team includes nine players from Alice, a player from Calallen, Sinton and Banquete.

Money raised from the event is being used to purchase uniforms and to play in World Series and USSSA tournaments. The teams also has several community projects include buying Thanksgiving meals for needy families, purchasing Christmas gifts and bikes for less fortunate children, scholarships for graduating baseball players and school supplies for students in need.
