KINGSVILLE — The San Diego High School girls cross country team is headed to the Region IV-3A championship.

The girls were edged by Santa Gertrudis and Bishop in the team standings at the District 31-3A Championships in Kingsville Monday and settled for third place which was good enough for qualify the team to regionals. The top three teams and top 10 individual runners at district advance to regionals.

San Diego was paced by Rianna Pena, who placed fifth with a time of 14:11.98. Micaela Gonzalez was sixth with a time of 14:14.91 and Madeline De la Rosa was eighth with a time of 14:34.44 Lyann Gonzalez was 18th and Loreana Hinojosa was 30th. Alejandra Trevino placed 31 and Jocelyn Torres was 32.

Santa Gertrudis’ Katrina Barrera won the girls’ run with a time of 12:59.12.

The San Diego boys narrowly missed advancing to regionals as a team. They placed fourth just four points behind third-place Banquete.

Derrick Gonzalez led San Diego by placing 10th with a time of 19:30.56. Carlos Gonzalez was 17th with a time of 20:10.31 and Brandon Ramirez was 18th with a time of 20:18.28. Zachary Tunchez was 25th with a time of 20:49.18 and Adam Garcia was 32 with a time of 21:57. 41. Also running for San Diego was Cris Laso, who placed 37th.

Banquete runner Walker Hendricks won the boys district championship with a time of 17:52.60.
