BEN BOLT — Coach Robert Beard remembers the last time Agua Dulce beat longtime rival Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco.

It was 2005, Beard’s first year as an assistant coach with the Badgers. The Longhorns beat the Badgers that year to claim the district champion. Since then, it’s been all Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco. However, that changed Friday night.

The Longhorns ended their losing streak the Badgers in a non-district Class 2A match-up Friday night, 27-12.

Running back Cruz Garza had another big night, rushing for 150 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Randal Garza completed 13 of 19 for 194 yards and three touchdowns.

The Badgers led at halftime, but the Longhorns came back in the second half.

“We did everything we could to give (Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco) the game in the first half,” Beard said. “We just didn’t play well. It was 12-6 at halftime, but it could have been 40-6. We settled down and played better in the second half.

"It’s really a big win for us. It’s just a non-district game, but anyone who knows about the Agua Dulce and Ben Bolt rivalry knows it's a big win for our program.”

The Longhorns are playing at home Friday against Runge. Game time is 7 p.m.
